Top 7 Tips for An Unforgettable Boudoir Photoshoot

Edmonton Boudoir Photography

A boudoir photoshoot is more than just getting your picture taken. It’s an experience and one that you will remember and cherish forever. And to ensure that you truly enjoy every moment of this experience, here are our top 7 PERSONALIZED tips for an unforgettable boudoir photoshoot.

1. Wear loose-fitting clothing to your boudoir shoot & bring outfits

Socks, bras, and panties all have elastics and can leave unsightly lines on your skin. To avoid this, wear loose-fitting clothing and why not go sans undergarments? Your skin will thank you for this.

Bring things that make you feel SEXY, anything that makes you stand a little taller and give you that CONFIDENT feeling inside. Trust that it will show on the camera, even if it is something that isn’t seen by the camera.

And don’t worry about piecing outfits together or bringing too much or too little, that’s what they are there for; they have your back and will style you to look your BEST. And although it may sound strange, the more uncomfortable you feel the better the photo will look.

2. Book your boudoir photoshoot for after your period

We all know how we get during that time of the month. So, to avoid feeling bloaty, cranky, and just plain unsexy, book your boudoir photoshoot after you’ve had your visit from Aunt Flow.

Not sure WHEN your period is due? Download a free app like Flo or track it using Apple Health. You can even go old school and mark the first date of your period in your calendar. Count out 28 days from there and you should know about when to expect your next period. To ensure you get accurate dates, track your cycle for a few months to gauge how long YOUR cycle is, because girl we are NOT all 28 days!

3. Arrive to your boudoir session fully hydrated

You may be nervous before your shoot, and we know that we all sweat when we’re nervous which may cause you to become dehydrated. The night before, avoid all alcohol and too much salt and drink lots of water. Staying hydrated will help ensure your skin looks its best, which, in turn, will make you look your best. But try not to stress about it 😅 We aren’t going for perfection, here. Stressing yourself out about eating and drinking perfectly the day before will just hurt your sleep quality.

4. Arrive fresh and clean

“Arrive to your shoot with fresh, clean, dry hair AND face,” suggests Heather. She’s one of the makeup artists you will meet if you have a boudoir photoshoot in Edmonton. offers the following tips.

The hair and makeup artist at a good boudoir photography studio will already have an AMAZING array of products she can use to get you camera ready. The more stuff you already have on your hair or face the harder it will be to get their products to work and do justice to your natural beauty.

BONUS TIP: Don’t be afraid to tell your hair and makeup artist what you want. You can bring in pictures of styles you like or just tell her your overall favourite looks. Your experience should be one where you work together to find just the right image.

Not sure what style you are wanting? We like thetrenspoter.net for some inspirational looks.

5. Practice Positive Affirmations

“One of the most important tips I can give clients is to remind themselves that they are WORTHY of this experience,” says Yahozka, owner and photographer.

“A lot of clients come in nervous and that’s OK. But what breaks my heart is when someone backs out of the experience altogether because she doesn’t think she DESERVES to spend money or time on herself of simply doesn’t think she’s beautiful enough. You ARE beautiful. You DO deserve to feel good and spend some time for YOU.”

One way to combat this feeling is to practice body POSITIVE affirmations in front of the mirror. But don’t make up stuff you don’t believe. Find your favourite qualities and talk yourself up. Feeling unworthy of your own self-love and self-care? Remind yourself all the reasons that you MATTER. Talk to yourself like you are your best friend. What would you tell HER if she felt unworthy? Don’t be afraid to repeat those affirmations throughout your shoot.

Check out these positive affirmations you can say in front of the mirror next time you need a boost in confidence.

6. Find a boudoir photographer who’ll help you smile & laungh

Laura, one of our photographers and makeup artists you will meet if you book a boudoir photoshoot in BC, reminds her clients that CONFIDENCE is key. Not only does she suggest the body positive affirmations we’ve already discussed, she thinks is extra important to find a studio with a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

“If your photographer can make you laugh, you’re halfway there.”

Some of the sexiest photos are when you are having fun, smiling, and laughing. Be yourself and let your personality and emotions shine through. Book a consult call with your desired location before booking the full boudoir shoot. That way, you can get a feel for the team you’ll be working with and know if they will help you feel relaxed and confident during your session.

Feel like you lack confidence, and your posture suffers for it making you look smaller? Try these 3 exercises that will make you look 2 inches taller and give you more confidence.

Before your session, try on all your outfits to help you get used to wearing them; it will make it less nerve-wracking the day of. This is also the perfect time to try those POSITIVE affirmations.
