5 Reasons you think you can’t do a boudoir shoot and why you’re wrong

Edmonton Boudoir Photography

“Why do I keep thinking about a boudoir shoot but not following through?” Sound familiar? A lot of women we talk to WANT to do a boudoir shoot but, for some reason, hold themselves back.

And let me tell you, I’ve been there! I literally do boudoir shoots for other people for a living but when it comes to doing my own I always drag my feet. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe you have some false beliefs about the boudoir shoot process. Or maybe, like me, you have false beliefs about what you DESERVE. Let’s tackle all that as we explore some of the most common reasons women hold themselves back from their boudoir shoots AND look at some solutions. Because, let’s be honest, the solutions are what we really need.

Gabriela Cruz Boudoir Photography busts boudoir photoshoot myths.

MYTH: I don’t have enough time for a boudoir shoot

What you’re really saying is, “I don’t have enough time for myself.” If that isn’t the very definition of what it feels like to be a woman today I don’t know what is. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Whether you’re a stay at home mom, a career woman, or someone trying to juggle both, the demands of the world never seem to slow down and putting ourselves first feels selfish.

Life is busy. We tell ourselves there’s no time.

Things are crazy at work. We tell ourselves we’re too exhausted.

Our kids, spouses, friends, parents – there is always someone else who needs us “more” than we think we need ourselves.

We’re wrong.

TRUTH: Life is not too busy to take time for ourselves

Being exhausted is not a reason to ignore yourself. It’s actually more of a reason to do something FOR yourself. In fact, studies have shown that regular self-care practice helps reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and symptoms of burnout.

It’s important to remember that if you aren’t taking care of yourself, you’re not going to be able to handle taking care of everyone else. It’s funny though, because a lot of us know this on the surface and we’re quick to say it to our friends, but when it comes to ourselves it’s a lot harder to apply.

I am the worst at making sure I am taking mental health breaks and that’s why I think it’s so important to share this with you all. I tell myself I’m too busy for self care ALL 👏🏽 THE 👏🏽 TIME 👏🏽 and sometimes I even need someone to look me in the face and say, “Slow down.”

So, take a very quick minute of self-care and really think about the following: Think of how it’ll feel to relax for a bit. To be pampered for a bit. Think about all the things you do for everyone else then think about what you do for yourself. You need to relax, too. You deserve to feel good about yourself. To see yourself outside of the day to day.

MYTH: I can’t do a boudoir photoshoot because I haven’t hit my goal weight

I will say this over and over again and sorry not sorry if you’ve heard me say it before. Why do you have to be a certain size to love yourself? Why do you have to have a “perfect” body to love your body? I put that in quotes because no one can even agree on what a perfect body is, anyway.

Why are you comparing your size and shape to anyone else? Maybe the genes handed down from their parents aren’t the same and their body type isn’t natural for you. Maybe their metabolism is different. Their health. Maybe they have help. Or, they have access to a better diet. Maybe they aren’t healthy or happy at all. It’s really hard to say what brings another person to look however they look. But the truth of it all is, they are not you. And who you are has nothing to do with the size of your pants.

TRUTH: A boudoir shoot can help you love the body you have

Wouldn’t it be better to celebrate the amazing body you HAVE than to wait for a body you may never have?

Now, let me be clear. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be fitter 💪🏽 or healthier or to just have a goal weight because it gives you something to strive for. The difference is when we decide that we aren’t “worthy” of something because we haven’t hit that goal.

MYTH: I never feel sexy anymore so a boudoir shoot must not be for me

It’s easy to lose that feeling. Sometimes when we try to get ourselves into any sort of sexy mood (in the bedroom or just getting dressed up nice to go out) we feel more of a fizzle than a spark. And then we want sweatpants and a tub of ice cream, instead. Or is it just me? 🤨

TRUTH: A boudoir shoot can help you FIND that sexy feeling

Not feeling sexy is actually a reason to do a boudoir shoot, not the other way around. First of all, it is absolutely NORMAL to get caught up in life and forget how sexy you are. This is why we often suggest making a whole day of your experience. Start with us and your shoot, then move on to a spa or a romantic night out with your spouse. Heck, bring your spouse along for a couples boudoir shoot!

If you are worried about having to wear things that just don’t fit your personality – don’t. We won’t make you wear or do anything you’re uncomfortable with. This is YOUR shoot. You don’t have to wear lingerie. It’s about your personality and your comfort level. If you have unique or different outfit ideas, let’s talk about them!

MYTH: A boudoir shoot is too expensive for me

A lot of women worry about the price tag attached to a boudoir shoot.

Let’s talk 2 truths for this one…

TRUTH #1: We offer affordable payment plan options

A big chunk of change at one time is a lot harder to commit to than a few small payments. To make things easier for you we offer payment plans so you can pay for your shoot in installments to make it easier to afford.

It’s like saving up for something but it ensures that your money goes toward your shoot. AND it helps you secure the perfect date for your shoot because we will hold your preferred date for you! We usually book 2-3 months in advance. BUT if you need more time we can book up to 6 months in advance. That way you can make payments over a longer period of time.

TRUTH #2: You ARE worth it

If your first thought after thinking about a boudoir shoot is, “I can’t spend that kind of money on myself.” Or, “I should use that money for something else -my kids / my spouse / my house.” Stop for a minute and evaluate that. Why do we do this to ourselves?

Why is it so hard for us to believe that we deserve things as women, partners, moms? Can’t we allow a luxury for ourselves without first doling out everything we have to everyone else? There will always be something that someone else wants. If we keep applying this mentality we will never have anything for ourselves.

Give yourself the oxygen mask! ❤️

MYTH: I’m too old for a boudoir shoot

A lot of women think that once they pass a certain milestone they are too old for boudoir. For some women this age is 60, for some it’s 50, for some it’s as young as 30 years old.

TRUTH: NO YOU’RE NOT

I mean, really, there isn’t much more to say about this one. You are never too old to smile, to laugh, to love yourself. You are never too old for boudoir!
